What choices can we make of the things within our control?
Our experiences and environment play a key role in who we are, and are often the sources of our problems and disability. Gender, class, race, and trauma are just some of the things I believe impact our physical/mental well-being. I take an Adlerian approach to counseling, applying a trauma-informed and social model of disability lens to my practice in order to define and tackle problems.
I believe therapy is a collaborative effort and that clients are responsible for their own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. With my assistance as a facilitator, you have the ability to choose how to resolve your problems. Of course, some things are out of our hands, but what choices can we make of the things within our control? I create a space to develop insight and awareness so that clients can grow and heal. I incorporate mindfulness practice and breathwork into my practice.
Outside the office, I enjoy playing with cats, knitting/crocheting, watching baseball (go Pirates!), and practicing tarot.
What I do:
I enjoy working with adolescents and adults. I have a particular interest in working with LGBTQ and Asian populations and people with other marginalized identities because of my own experiences with these groups and my interest in their liberation as a whole. I try to take an abolitionist approach to counseling, so crisis prevention and using community support are priorities in my practice.
I bring a mix of tools to therapy, including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), the Flash Technique (a gentle trauma treatment), and Expressive Arts Therapy. That might mean we incorporate drawing, writing, movement, or other creative ways to process what you’re going through, because sometimes words just aren’t enough. Whether we’re diving into tough memories or exploring new ways to express emotions, we go at a pace that feels right for you.
Education & Training
I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at West Virginia University and my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Sam Houston State University. I have interned at West Oaks Hospital’s inpatient and outpatient facilities, where I gained experience conducting individual and group therapy for adolescents and adults dealing with issues ranging from substance abuse to depression and anxiety.
